Creepy Crawly Things (Are Delicious)

Now that we’re well into October, it’s time to start focusing on that all-important holiday: Christmas. Wait, that’s too soon. Don’t focus on Christmas yet. Stop focusing on Christmas!

It’s time to start focusing on Halloween, which has always been one of my personal favorites. I love when the spooky things come out, like vampires, werewolves, that big troll from Ernest Scared Stupid, and … SPIDERS!!!

Most people are completely freaked out by spiders, but I’ve heard others argue that they’re wonderful creatures who create “works of art” through their webs.

It made me wonder if some spiders wear french berets and reassure each other of their importance to the creative world. They might be a bunch of pretentious jerks for all we know.

Then I remembered that Olive likes to eat spiders. Webbing and all. So in the world of bugs, spiders might be creative geniuses, but in the world of cats, they’re an afternoon snack. Mwa ha ha ha haaaaa.

Bring the Heat

It’s fall here in Indiana (and other places) and the temperature is finally starting to cool down. Some might say it’s even getting chilly enough to turn on the heat.

Heat is a great invention because even if it’s freezing outside, the heat can keep you at room temperature inside. But what if room temperature isn’t enough? What if you need oppressive heat? Obnoxious heat? Heat that makes you unable to move? Unable to breath?

Enter the space heater. One of peoples’ favorite fall/winter inventions that makes you feel like that guy whose face melted at the end of Indiana Jones. It’s heat with a grenade launcher in it’s hand and a tattoo of Dolph Lundgren on its bicep. It calls you a girly man as it chomps its cigar.

Now granted, our living room can be a little tricky to keep warm in the winter, as a lot of the warm air tends to move up into our loft. So limited, LIMITED use of a space heater is acceptable.

When this limited use of the space heater is happening, it tends to be Olive’s favorite place to curl up and sleep. Not next to it, mind you, but up against it so that her fur is touching it. We’ve had to pull her away from it many times because we were afraid that she would literally light on fire.

If it ever happened while we weren’t around, at least Hazel would be there to take action. We hope.

Olive and Hazel Meet Georgia

So two weeks ago, the lives of Meghan and I changed forever with the birth of our first daughter, Georgia Mary Anne Gross. We’re overjoyed that she’s here now and have been having an awesome time as parents. Sure, there are a few long nights here and there, but they’re worth it :)

Initially, I was a little nervous about bringing a baby home to the cats. I’d heard a few scary stories about infants being attacked by jealous pets (don’t you just love those?) but to be perfectly honest, the baby and the cats have been getting along great.

At first, Hazel kept her distance, but has been gradually warming up to the baby. Olive, on the other hand, instantly fell in love and enjoys sitting in on all of the feedings and diaper changes. It’s almost too cute for words.

We’ve experienced so much happiness lately, so I hope today’s strip gives you a smile or a laugh too. Sorry if I’ve sounded a little hokey. Babies do that to you ;)

Free Us!

It’s a well-known fact that cats see and hear things that aren’t there. I’ve often observed Olive running through the living room at night, swinging at some invisible opponent and trying to climb the walls to reach some unseen object.

She also has a fascination with the washing machine whenever it’s running. Perhaps the clothes inside are calling out to her to free them from their damp, spinning jail cell.

Hazel is of course baffled by all of this. As am I.
