I Like Treats. Infinity.

by Matt on July 13, 2021 at 12:01 am

Every day before leaving for work, and when getting home from work, Meg and I give Hazel and Olive tiny cat treats.

It was tricky at first, because Olive is such a glutton that she perfected a move in which she could use her paw to swipe Hazel’s treat out from under her, pop the treat into her own mouth and swallow it whole, all in under two seconds.

We eventually worked out a system in which Hazel’s treat was put on the floor, but Olive’s was held a few feet above her head, causing her to have to stand on her hind legs, reach up with her front paws and get the treat, giving Hazel enough time to eat hers.

The system works pretty well, other than occasionally getting scratched by an overzealous Olive. She also likes to try and lick the cat treat residue from our fingers, which is kind of nasty, and causes us to have to scrub our hands.

Cage Life Changes You

by Matt on July 6, 2021 at 12:01 am

It’s true. Olive once lived in a cage, or pet store if you will. Is that why she acts so strange sometimes? Is that where the random biting comes from?

Pet Stores can be rough places. It’s every animal for himself in there. Meg and I have done everything we can to tame the beast that is Olive, but it’s a bit of an uphill battle at times.

Oh, the perils of owning a cat.

Let’s Blow Some Stuff Up!

by Matt on June 29, 2021 at 12:01 am

The 4th of July is nearly here, and you know what that means! That one place that closed a while back (sad trombone for the economy) is now a fireworks store! How exciting!

People in our neighborhood love to blow stuff up real good on the 4th, and it always makes me thankful that Olive doesn’t have opposable thumbs and can’t use matches. If so, she would bring the whole house down, yo!

Squirrel Power

by Matt on June 22, 2021 at 12:01 am

Squirrels have a power over cats. Seriously. Cats can sit and watch squirrels for hours, forgetting where they are and what’s around them.

I’ve seen both Olive and Hazel charge at squirrels, forgetting that there’s a screen door between them and their prey. They bounce off the barrier, shake their heads and snap back into reality.

Do the squirrels know that they have this power over the cats? Are they toying with them? I think that may be the case.
